Child Welfare

There are a number of risks and circumstances that are present in the world today that can have an adverse effect on the welfare of our children. These risks stem from many different places and for many different reasons.

Technological advances have provided us with amazing capabilities that were once hard to even imagine. Worldwide communication is now possible with the click of a button, breakthroughs in the medical field are helping to increase longevity and quality of life, and new devices and gadgets are introduced almost daily which provide us with new conveniences and opportunities not previously thought to be possible. One thing that is often overlooked, however, is the risk that technology presents to the youth of the world.

Children today can barely imagine a world without computers and the internet. Long forgotten are the days of sitting down, reading a book, and actually learning information first hand. Trial and error, experimentation, and effort have been replaced by “Googling” an answer for just about anything they can imagine. Why try when someone else has probably already done the work? The ease of being able to access information has caused many children to become lazy and dependent upon the virtual world to do their work for them.
Another technological advancement that has had a tangible effect on today’s children is the increasing popularity of text messaging. Texting language has become the primary way that many of these kids communicate with each other and has left many of them incapable of writing correctly and coherently. They have learned to communicate in 160 character, abbreviated blurbs and it has rendered many of them incapable of effective written communication. It might be great for a quick message to a friend, but constructing a resume could become an insurmountable challenge down the road.

Child predators are another disturbing, yet very real, threat to the welfare of our children. Blogs, chat rooms, and social networking sites like Facebook, My Space, and Twitter are breeding grounds for predators to identify their prey. Kids disclose private and personal information in a way that makes it extremely easy for seedy characters to get their hands on it. These predators manipulate kids in any number of ways, and have been pursuing these children at an alarming pace. There is no shortage of news stories describing a child being abducted, sexually abused, or mistreated in other ways at the hands of these online predators.

As the world becomes an increasingly fast paced place to live, lifestyle choices inevitably evolve with it. Obesity has become a major epidemic amongst children and can be partially attributed to our need for instant gratification and a lack of time in our busy schedules for a home cooked meal. Fast food consumption in the US has reached staggering levels. The traditional sit down dinner around the family’s dining room table has been replaced with deep fried, fatty, unhealthy food being consumed while constantly on the go. Not only does it deprive children of essential nutrition and lead to obesity and other health problems, it also robs them of precious quality time with their families.

It is the responsibility of parents to take charge of the way that their kids live their lives. Each new day will present a new host of opportunities that can have an adverse impact on the welfare of our children. If we pay attention and keep ourselves involved, we can at least mitigate some of those risks.
